신념은 구원의 길인가, 또 다른 감옥인가

저는 영화 《킹덤 오브 헤븐》을 보면서 단순히 “전쟁 영화”라기보다는, 사람들이 왜 그렇게까지 신의 이름을 외치며 죽고 죽였는지가 더 크게 다가왔습니다. 칼과 방패보다 무서운 건 사람을 움직이는 신념이라는 걸 느껴서 이 글을 써보았습니다.

영화 《킹덤 오브 헤븐》을 보면서 제가 가장 크게 느낀 것은 전쟁의 잔혹함이 아니라, 신념이 인간을 어떻게 지배하는가 하는 문제였습니다. 십자군은 “예루살렘은 신의 도시이므로 반드시 지켜야 한다”고 외쳤습니다. 살라딘 또한 “알라의 의지”를 말하며 전쟁을 정당화했습니다. 서로 다른 신을 부르짖고 있지만, 사실은 모두 같은 이유로 싸운 것입니다. 신념은 그들에게 힘이 되었지만, 동시에 눈을 가리는 가면이기도 했습니다.

인간은 왜 이렇게까지 종교를 숭배하는지 의문점이 들었습니다. 저는 그것이 두려움 때문이라고 생각합니다. 인간은 언제나 불확실한 세계 속에 살았고. 죽음, 고통, 불평등 같은 문제 앞에서, 종교와 신념은 답을 줍니다. 믿으면 두려움이 줄어들고, 불합리한 현실도 설명됩니다. 그래서 사람들은 신을 택하고, 그 신념에 매달립니다. 그러나 문제는 그 신념이 한계를 넘어설 때입니다. 신념은 인간을 구원하기도 하지만, 동시에 인간을 서로 죽이게도 만듭니다.

저는 한국 사회에서도 이 모습을 자주 봅니다. 예를 들어, 일부 종교 단체가 팬데믹 시기에도 “신이 지켜주신다”며 방역을 거부했던 사건이 떠오릅니다. 그 신념은 믿는 자에게 위로가 되었겠지만, 동시에 수많은 사람들을 위험에 빠뜨렸습니다. 종교만이 아닙니다. 정치적 이념, 학벌, 심지어는 ‘애국심’이라는 이름까지도 신념처럼 숭배됩니다. 그리고 그 신념이 도덕보다 앞설 때, 인간은 언제든 타인을 희생시키는 괴물이 됩니다.

영화 속 발리앙은 이렇게 말합니다. “예루살렘은 돌과 흙일 뿐이다. 그러나 사람들을 지킨다면 신의 도시가 될 수 있다.” 저는 이 말이 종교와 신념의 본질을 꿰뚫는다고 생각합니다. 신은 결국 인간이 만든 상징이고, 진짜 지켜야 할 것은 인간 그 자체입니다. 종교는 인간을 위로하기 위해 필요할 수 있지만, 인간을 압도하거나 죽음으로 몰아가서는 안 된다고 생각합니다.

신념은 인간을 자유롭게 하는가, 아니면 더 큰 감옥을 만드는가? 저는 이 영화가 그 질문을 남겼다고 느꼈습니다.

When I watched Kingdom of Heaven, I didn’t just see it as a “war movie.” What struck me more was the question of why people were so willing to shout the name of God while killing and dying for Him. I realized that sharper than swords and shields was something far stronger—the power of belief to move people. That’s why I felt compelled to write this reflection.

The biggest impression I got from the film was not the cruelty of war itself, but how belief can rule over human beings. The Crusaders declared, “Jerusalem is God’s city and must be defended.” Saladin, on the other hand, justified his war by saying it was “the will of Allah.” They were crying out to different gods, yet in truth, they were fighting for the same reason. Belief gave them strength, but it also blinded them like a mask.

I began to wonder: why do people worship religion with such intensity? I think the reason is fear. Humanity has always lived in an uncertain world—facing death, pain, and injustice. Religion and belief seem to offer answers. Faith eases fear and explains unfair realities. That is why people cling to belief. But the problem comes when belief goes too far. It can save, but it can also turn humans into enemies and killers.

I see this pattern in modern society too. During the pandemic, some religious groups in Korea rejected safety measures, saying “God will protect us.” For the faithful, that belief may have brought comfort, but for many others it brought danger. And it is not only religion. Political ideologies, academic elitism, even so-called “patriotism” can all be treated like sacred beliefs. And when such beliefs are placed above morality, people can become monsters in the name of virtue.

In the movie, Balian says: “Jerusalem is nothing but a lot of stone and dirt. But if it is a place where people are protected, then it becomes the city of God.” To me, this line captures the heart of belief and religion. God is ultimately a symbol created by humans, but what truly matters is protecting human beings themselves. Religion may comfort people, but it must never overwhelm them or push them into destruction.

So I am left with this question: does belief make us free, or does it build a bigger prison around us? I think Kingdom of Heaven leaves that very question for us to wrestle with.
