저는 영화 타임머신(1960)을 보고, 기술이 발전해도 인간이 더 나아지는 것은 아니라는 사실을 느꼈습니다. 미래의 인간들은 편리함에 익숙해진 나머지 사고를 멈추고 타락한 모습으로 퇴화해 있었습니다. 저는 로봇공학을 전공하려는 입장에서, 이 장면들이 단지 공상이 아니라 오늘날 기술 의존 사회의 경고처럼 보였습니다. 그래서 이 글을 통해 기술이 인간을 진정으로 구원하려면, 방향성과 책임이 반드시 함께 가야 한다는 것을 얻었습니다.

기술은 과연 인간을 구원할 수 있는가. 저는 영화 《타임머신》(1960)을 보고, 이 질문이 단순한 공상과학적 상상이 아니라 제 전공이 될 로봇공학의 본질을 되묻는 물음으로 다가왔습니다. 영화 속에서 주인공은 시간을 초월하는 기계를 만들어 먼 미래로 갑니다. 그 미래는 처음에는 평화로워 보이지만, 사실상 몰락한 문명이었습니다. 기술은 눈에 띄지 않고, 인간은 지혜도 의지도 없는 존재로 퇴화해 있습니다. 겉으로는 아름다워 보이지만, 그 사회는 지하의 몰록에게 지배당하며 사실상 노예 상태에 놓여 있었습니다. 저는 이 장면들이 로봇공학의 미래와 겹쳐졌습니다. 우리가 지금 만드는 기술이 정말 인간을 위해 존재하는가, 아니면 인간의 본질적 퇴화를 감추는 환상 인지 의문이듭니다. 저는 로봇공학이라는 전공이 단지 자동화를 위한 기술 개발이 아니라, 인간성과 사회성에 대한 철학적 성찰 위에서 출발해야 한다고 생각합니다. 영화는 기술이 극단까지 발전해도 인간이 기술에 대해 책임지지 않고, 그것을 통해 더 나은 가치를 추구하지 않으면 결국 인간성 자체가 붕괴된다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 엘로이는 인간이지만 인간적이지 않았고, 그들은 기술이 만들어준 안락함 속에서 사고를 멈췄습니다. 몰록은 기술을 지배의 수단으로 전락시켰고, 서로는 서로를 도구처럼 이용하는 존재가 되었습니다. 저는 로봇공학도 이와 다르지 않다고 생각합니다. 기술은 방향 없이 진보하지 않으며, 그것을 어떻게 설계하고 운용하느냐에 따라 인간의 삶을 해방할 수도, 속박할 수도 있습니다. 로봇은 인간의 고통을 덜어줄 수 있지만, 동시에 감시의 도구가 될 수도 있으며, 인간관계를 대체할 수도 있습니다. 저는 이 영화가 기술의 중립성을 경고하는 것이 아니라, 기술이 방향을 잃을 때 인간성 자체가 파괴된다는 사실을 말하고 있다고 느꼈습니다. 로봇공학은 지금까지 기능성과 효율성을 중심으로 발전해왔지만, 이제는 사회적 책임과 윤리적 비전을 함께 담아야 한다고 생각합니다. 저는 이 영화를 보고 로봇공학을 단순한 기술적 영역이 아닌, 인간을 어떻게 이해하고 돕고 연결할 것인가에 대한 깊은 성찰의 도구로 접근하고 싶다는 확신을 가졌습니다. 기술이 인간을 구원하지 못하는 미래를 막기 위해서는, 기술 그 자체보다 그것을 설계하고 사용하는 인간의 책임과 가치가 먼저 서야 하기 때문입니다.

After watching the movie The Time Machine (1960), I realized that even if technology advances, it does not always mean humans become better. In the far future shown in the film, people live in comfort but have lost the ability to think and act for themselves. They have become weak, passive, and disconnected from meaning. As a student planning to major in robotics, I did not see this only as science fiction. It felt more like a warning about today’s technology-dependent society. That is why I wrote this reflection—to show that for technology to truly help humanity, it must be guided by direction and responsibility.

Can technology really save humanity? This question came to me strongly while watching The Time Machine. In the movie, the main character creates a machine that lets him travel far into the future. What he finds is not progress, but collapse. Technology is no longer visible, and humans have become unintelligent and powerless. Although the world looks peaceful and beautiful, it is actually controlled by a hidden race called the Morlocks. The surface people, the Eloi, live like prisoners, without knowledge or purpose. This made me think about the future of robotics. Are we building machines to improve our lives—or to cover up our growing weakness?

I believe robotics is not just about making things faster or easier. It should begin with deep thinking about human values and responsibility. The movie shows that even when technology becomes powerful, it cannot protect us from decline unless we use it with wisdom and care. The Eloi stopped thinking because everything was too easy. The Morlocks used technology to control others. Neither side showed real humanity. I think robotics can face the same danger. A robot can help people, but it can also be used for surveillance, control, or even to replace real human connection.

The movie does not simply warn us about technology. It tells us what happens when technology has no direction—when humans stop asking why we build, and who we build for. That is why robotics today must grow not only in efficiency but also in social and ethical responsibility. Watching this film helped me understand that my major is not only about machines. It is about how technology can serve humans, protect our dignity, and connect us in meaningful ways. If we want to avoid a future where technology cannot save us, we must first ask ourselves what kind of future we are truly building.
