우리들의 일그러진 영웅

저는 이 영화를 보면서 조지 오웰의 《동물 농장》이 떠올랐습니다. 《동물 농장》에서는 돼지들이 혁명을 통해 동물들을 이끌며 새로운 사회를 구축하지만, 그 권력은 점차 독재로 변질됩니다. "모든 동물은 평등하다"는 슬로건이 "어떤 동물은 더 평등하다"는 위선으로 변하는 부분은 《우리들의 일그러진 영웅》에서 엄석대가 교실이라는 작은 사회에서 권력을 장악하며 자신의 권위를 유지하기 위해 친구들을 통제하고 협박하는 것과 비슷하다고 느꼈습니다. 또한 《동물 농장》에서는 동물들이 돼지들의 독재적 행태에 의문을 품지만, 두려움과 체념으로 체제에 순응하는 모습이 나타납니다. 이 영화에서는 병태가 처음에는 석대의 권력에 저항하지만, 점차 그의 체제에 동조하며 편안함과 안정을 느끼고 순응하는 장면과 비슷하다고 생각했습니다. 마지막으로, 두 작품은 권력이 절대적이지 않으며, 변화에 따라 쉽게 붕괴될 수 있음을 드러내는 공통점을 가지고 있다고 봅니다. 《동물 농장》의 마지막 장면에서 권력이 타락하는 모습과 《우리들의 일그러진 영웅》에서 새로운 선생님의 등장으로 석대가 권력을 잃는 모습이 이를 보여줍니다.

저는 이 영화를 보며 병태가 석대의 체제에 동조하는 모습이나 동물들이 돼지들의 독재를 수용하는 모습을 통해 저 자신을 돌아보게 되었습니다. 저 역시 불합리한 상황에서 안정을 선택하고, 저항하기보다 타협한 적이 있기에 이 영화를 보며 많은 것을 느꼈습니다. 저를 포함해 다른 사람들도 체제 속에서 자신의 생존과 이익을 우선시하며 종종 더 큰 가치를 희생하는 경우가 많다는 생각도 들었습니다.

두 작품을 통해 가장 크게 고민한 점은 권력에 순응하는 것이 당장의 안전을 보장하지만, 그 결과는 종종 더 큰 불의로 이어진다는 것입니다. 반면, 저항은 용기와 대가를 요구합니다. 이는 개인적 차원뿐만 아니라, 사회적, 정치적 차원에서도 중요한 고민거리라고 생각합니다. 그래서, 이상적인 권력을 찾기보다는 권력의 오용을 감시하고 견제하는 노력이 지속되어야 한다는 결론에 도달했습니다.

발제: 이상적 권력은 가능한가? 두 작품 모두 권력의 변질과 붕괴를 통해 "이상적인 권력이나 체제란 존재할 수 있는가?"라는 의문을 제기합니다. 개인의 자유와 평등을 보장하면서도 강압적이지 않은 권력을 어떻게 만들어낼 수 있을지에 대해 질문하고 싶습니다.

This movie reminded me of George Orwell's Animal Farm. In Animal Farm, the pigs lead the animals through a revolution and build a new society, but their power gradually degenerates into dictatorship. The slogan "All animals are equal" changes into hypocrisy, "Some animals are more equal." I felt that this is similar to how Eom Seok-dae seizes power in a small society called a classroom and controls and threatens his friends to maintain his authority. Also, in Animal Farm, the animals question the pigs' dictatorial behavior, but they conform to the system with fear and resignation. In this movie, Byeong-tae initially resists Seok-dae's power, but gradually sympathizes with his system and feels comfort and stability, and responds. Lastly, it seems to reveal that power is not absolute and can easily collapse with change. This is because in Animal Farm, the final scene shows the corruption of power, and in Our Twisted Hero, the teacher appears and loses power. Watching this movie, I think the way Byung-tae sympathizes with Seok-dae’s regime and the way the animals accept the tyranny of the pigs made me reflect on myself. I, too, have chosen stability in unreasonable situations and compromised rather than resisted, so I felt a lot while watching this movie. Also, I think that others, including myself, prioritize their own survival and interests within the system, often sacrificing greater values.

The biggest concern I had through the two movies was that while complying with power guarantees immediate safety, the result often leads to greater injustice. On the other hand, resistance requires courage and a price. I think this is an important concern not only on a personal level, but also on a social and political level. Therefore, rather than seeking an ideal power, I conclude that efforts should continue to monitor and check the misuse of power.

Presentation: Is an ideal power possible? Both works ask the question, “Can an ideal power or system exist?” through the corruption and collapse of power. I would like to ask how we can create a power that guarantees individual freedom and equality while not being coercive.
