 The background of the movie is the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the main character is Robert Jordan, an American who joins the Republican Army. Jordan is tasked with blowing up the bridge, thereby cutting off the rebels' supply route and aiding the Republican army in its war effort. He ends up collaborating with the Spanish resistance, and along the way he meets and falls in love with a woman named María.

Love and War: The film explores the love and power that blooms amidst the cruel reality of war. Robert and Maria's romance shows how important human emotions and connections are, even in the dire circumstances they find themselves in.

Sacrifice: The main character, Jordan, is forced to choose between his mission and his love. He seeks to achieve a greater cause by sacrificing himself, reflecting the human interconnectedness emphasized in John Donne's poetry and Hemingway's novels.
