권력은 왜 자꾸 부패할까

영화를 보다가 왕위 찬탈과 살인으로 세워진 권력이 결국 복수와 파멸로 가는 과정이 한국 사회에서 반복되는 정치 스캔들이 떠올라서 이 글을 한 번 써보았습니다.

솔직히 한국 사회 뉴스를 보면 권력이라는 것이 꼭 사람들을 위해 쓰이지는 않는 것 같습니다. 박근혜-최순실 사건도 결국 권력을 사적으로 이용해서 나라를 자기들 마음대로 움직였던 사건이 있었습니다. 국민은 힘들어도 자기들만 이익을 챙겼고, 그 일이 드러나자 결국 촛불집회로 대통력이 내려올 수 밖에 없었습니다. 그런데 그런 일이 한 번으로 끝난 것도 아니었습니다. 최근에도 대장동 개발 의혹 사건을 보면 정치인과 돈 가진 사람들이 결탁해서 엄청난 이익을 챙겼다는 말이 계속 나오고 있습니다. 또 김건희 여사의 논문 표절 문제나 주가 조작 의혹 같은 사건을 보면, 권력이 있으면 웬만한 규칙은 다 무너지는 것처럼 보였습니다. 결국 법과 제도가 있어도 권력을 가진 사람들에게는 별로 작동하지 않는 것처럼 보였습니다.

저는 이런 상황을 보면서 "권력은 왜 자꾸 부패로 이어질까"라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 권력이란 것은 원래 국민을 위해 쓰라고 존재하는 것인데, 실제로는 자기들 보호막으로만 쓰이는 경우가 많았기 때문입니다. 그래서 중요한 것은 권력 자체보다도, 그것을 제대로 감시할 수 있는 시민의 눈이라고 생각하고. 그것이 사라진다면 같은 비극은 계속 반복될 수밖에 없을 것입니다.

Why Does Power Keep Leading to Corruption?

While watching a movie about a throne seized through usurpation and murder, and how that power eventually collapsed into revenge and ruin, I was reminded of the recurring political scandals in Korean society.

Honestly, when I read the news in Korea, it seems that power is not always used for the people. For example, the Park Geun-hye–Choi Soon-sil scandal showed how power was exploited for private gain, bending the nation to their will. Even when the people struggled, they secured benefits only for themselves. Once their deeds were revealed, the massive candlelight protests forced the president to step down. Yet that was not the end. More recently, the Daejang-dong development scandal raised allegations that politicians and wealthy figures colluded to pocket enormous profits. Furthermore, issues like the plagiarism controversy surrounding First Lady Kim Keon-hee’s dissertation and suspicions of stock manipulation suggest that once someone holds power, most rules seem to collapse. Laws and systems exist, but they hardly seem to apply to those who wield authority.

Witnessing this, I cannot help but ask, “Why does power so often lead to corruption?” Power is supposed to exist for the sake of the people, but in reality, it is too often used as a shield for personal protection. That is why I believe what matters more than power itself is the vigilant gaze of citizens. Without it, the same tragedies will inevitably repeat.
