He harbors a desire to rebel against the control of the party, but he lives an isolated life that cannot be expressed.

Winston accidentally meets a rebellious woman, Julia, and falls in love. Together, they venture out to get out of the party's control, but their challenge is very difficult because the party monitors and controls everything.

The film depicts Winston and Julia's struggle between resistance and Party control. But Party tramples on them with absolute power, and their resistance ends up with a miserable end.

The concept of thoughtcrime makes even a single line of diary criticism against the system, or a single moment of anger, a crime. This eliminates the ability of humans to think, and even obscures what the truth is. The slogan “2+2=5” is its symbol, a terrifying declaration that truth is no longer an objective reality, but something that power says.

The relationship between the main characters Winston and Julia was the only resistance to the system. However, the surveillance system destroys even this. Human relationships, especially love, presuppose mutual trust and secrets. But in a space where everything is under surveillance, even love is impossible. The scene where Julia and Winston are forced to betray each other symbolizes not just the destruction of individuals, but the collapse of humanity itself.

In the case of South Korea, during the past military dictatorship, the government thoroughly censored and controlled citizens’ phone calls, letters, and even artistic expressions under the pretext of national security. The state imprisoned countless young people under the name of ‘thought criminals,’ and criticism of the regime was immediately regarded as an attempt to overthrow the state. Even in modern times, its legacy still remains.

Some political circles have stirred up social controversy by manipulating Internet comments, attempting to control the media, and conducting surveillance by intelligence agencies. These cases are not limited to Korea. China’s social credit system, the NSA’s large-scale wiretapping incident in the US, and Russia’s online censorship and arrest of critics of the regime are all various faces of the modern-day ‘Big Brother.’

Surveillance today is becoming increasingly technological and invisible. If surveillance in the past was cameras, now it is algorithms, data, and smartphones. But there is something we must remember: the more complete the surveillance becomes, the more silent and submissive humans become. At the same time, the human nature to criticize, question, and record has not yet been extinguished.

If truth can be determined by power, can the concept of 'truth' exist?

Watching this movie, I got to see clearly how the human mind is suppressed and transformed under the strict control of the party. Winston and Julia fight for their own desires and freedoms despite the party's strong control.

However, the film is not just about party pressure. Rather, party control presents a warning about the abuse and control of power we can face in the real world. It has made me think again about how important it is to protect individual freedom and human dignity.

Also, human desires and resistance in movies remind us that no matter what environment we are in, there are desires and hopes that are deeply hidden within us. This has created a strong mind that I should not give up under any difficult situation.

Lastly, the film instructively shows us the importance of strength and courage. Winston and Julia put their everything on the line to keep their values. This imagines that no matter what difficulties I face, I must abide by our principles and move toward our dreams.
