1. 여정의 시작

크리스천은 멸망할 도시에서 가족과 함께 살고 있던 평범한 남자입니다. 어느 날, 한 책(성경)을 읽고 자신이 죄로 인해 멸망할 운명임을 깨닫고 깊은 고민에 빠집니다. 그는 친구들과 가족들에게 이를 알리지만, 아무도 그의 말을 믿지 않습니다. 결국, 그는 가족을 뒤로하고 **하늘 도성(천국)**을 향한 여정을 떠나기로 결심합니다.

2. 믿음의 시험과 유혹

크리스천은 길을 나서자마자 여러 장애물을 만나게 됩니다.

• 절망의 늪: 믿음이 흔들릴 때 빠지는 절망의 늪에서 빠져나오고,

우리는 흔히 신앙을 "길"이라고 합니다. 하지만 길이란 무엇인가? 정해진 목적지가 있고, 그 길을 따라가면 결국 도착할 수 있는 것입니다. 그렇다면 신앙도 그렇게 단순한 걸까? 그저 참고 견디며 걷기만 하면 천국에 도착할 수 있는 걸까? 영화 천로역정을 보면, 크리스천은 고난을 겪으며 길을 나아갑니다. 허영의 시장을 지나고, 절망의 늪을 빠져나오고, 믿음의 친구를 잃기도 한다. 그런데 저는 이런 생각이 들었습니다. "정말 이게 신앙의 본질일까?" 신앙이란 단순히 길을 따라가는 것이 아니라, 길을 스스로 만들어가는 과정이 아닐까?

천로역정이 정말 역정(旅程)일까?

이야기를 자세히 들여다보면, 크리스천은 사실 정해진 길을 걷고 있지 않습니다. 그는 끝없이 선택하고, 고민하고, 때로는 잘못된 길로 빠지기도 합니다. 절망의 늪에 빠지지 않기 위해 피하는 법을 배운 것이 아닙니다. 그는 직접 빠져보고 나서야 그것이 늪이라는 걸 깨달았습니다. 그렇다면 신앙이란 무엇인가? 길을 아는 것인가, 길을 직접 경험하는 것인가?

저는 여기서 하나의 파격적인 가설을 세워보았습니다.

신앙이란 애초에 '길'이 아닐지도 모른다.

우리는 천국으로 가는 길을 걸어가고 있다고 생각하지만, 사실 천국은 어딘가에 정해진 목적지가 아니라, 우리가 만들어내는 공간일지도 모릅니다. 크리스천이 길을 걸으며 배운 건 "어떻게 천국에 가느냐"가 아니라, 자신이 믿음을 통해 세상을 어떻게 바꾸느냐였습니다. 허영의 시장에서 그는 세상의 유혹을 거부했지만, 과연 허영의 시장 자체는 변했을까? 만약 그는 허영의 시장을 떠나는 것이 아니라, 그 안에서 천국을 만들려고 했다면 어땠을까?

그러니까, 이 영화는 단순한 순례자의 여정을 그린 것이 아니라, 우리가 한 가지 중요한 질문을 던져야 한다고 말하는 것 같다.

"천국은 우리가 도착하는 곳인가, 우리가 만들어가는 곳인가?"

만약 후자라면, 천로역정의 메시지는 완전히 뒤집힙니다. 신앙은 단순히 견디는 것이 아니고. 믿음은 우리가 미래에 보상을 받기 위해 참고 견디는 것이 아니라, 지금 이 순간에도 '천국 같은 세상'을 만들기 위해 행동하는 것이 됩니다.

그렇다면, 크리스천은 정말 옳은 선택을 한 걸까?

그가 떠나온 도시는 정말 구원받을 수 없었던 걸까?

그가 천국에 도착했을 때, 그는 이미 지옥을 만들고 온 것은 아닐까?

저는 천로역정을 보며 이런 상상을 해보았습니다. 만약 크리스천이 천국을 찾는 것이 아니라, 천국을 만들어가는 이야기였다면 어땠을까? 만약 그는 도망치는 것이 아니라, 허영의 시장에서 새로운 길을 열었다면 어땠을까?

신앙은 단순한 여정이 아니다. 신앙은 선택이고, 신앙은 창조다.

천국은 어딘가에 준비된 것이 아니라, 우리가 만들어가는 것일지도 모릅니다.

영화의 의미

This animated film is based on John Bunyan's Christian classic Pilgrim's Progress, and tells the story of a protagonist named Christian who embarks on a journey of faith toward the heavenly city.

1. The Beginning of the Journey

Christian is an ordinary man living with his family in a city that is destined to be destroyed. One day, he reads a book (the Bible) and realizes that he is destined to perish because of his sins, and he falls into deep thought. He tells his friends and family about this, but no one believes him. Eventually, he decides to leave his family behind and embark on a journey toward the **heavenly city (heaven)**.

2. Tests and Temptations of Faith

Christian encounters many obstacles as soon as he sets out on his journey.

The Swamp of Despair: When your faith wavers, you will escape from the swamp of despair,

Secular Wisdom: You will meet people who tempt you to take the easy and comfortable path.

You will enter the path of true faith after passing through the narrow gate.

After that, Christian encounters various places and people that test his faith.

Vanity Fair: He tries not to give up his faith in a place full of worldly temptations and pleasures, but his friend Faithful becomes a martyr.

Giant's Castle: He is captured by the Giant of Despair and imprisoned, but he escapes through the power of prayer.

Castle of Doubt: He falls into disbelief and doubt, but he regains his faith.

3. Arriving at the Heavenly City

Christian crosses the last obstacle, the River of Death, with his companion Hopeful. After crossing the river, an angel finally welcomes them and opens the gates of the Heavenly City (Heaven). Now, Christian will enjoy eternal rest and joy.

The meaning of the film

This film emphasizes the hardships and trials of keeping faith, and how important it is to maintain faith until the end. Christian's journey is a metaphor for the inner struggle and growth process that all believers experience, and it delivers a message of hope and courage to us.

What impressed me most while watching the film was how realistically it portrayed how difficult the path to faith is. As Christian embarks on his journey, he encounters various obstacles such as the Swamp of Despair, Vanity Fair, and the Giant's Castle. I think these scenes are not mere fantasy, but rather a symbolic expression of the temptations and trials we experience in real life.

"Pilgrim's Progress: Is Faith Really a 'Way'?"

We often call faith a "way." But what is a way? There is a set destination, and if you follow that way, you will eventually arrive. So is faith that simple? Can you just endure and walk to heaven? In the movie Pilgrim's Progress, Christian goes through hardships and goes on his way. He passes through the Vanity Fair, escapes the swamp of despair, and loses a friend of faith. But I thought to myself, "Is this really the essence of faith?" Isn't faith not simply following a way, but a process of creating a way for oneself?

Is Pilgrim's Progress really a journey?

If we look closely at the story, we see that Christian is not actually walking a set path. He endlessly makes choices, worries, and sometimes falls into the wrong path. He did not learn how to avoid falling into the swamp of despair. He realized that it was a swamp after falling into it himself. So what is faith? Knowing the way or experiencing the way directly?

I will make a radical hypothesis here.

Faith may not be a 'way' in the first place.

We think we are walking the road to heaven, but in fact, heaven is not a fixed destination, but a space that we create. What Christian learned while walking the road was not "how to get to heaven," but how to change the world through his faith. He rejected the temptations of the world, but did the market itself change? What if he had tried to create heaven within the market instead of leaving it?

So, this film does not simply depict a pilgrim's journey, but seems to be telling us that we must ask one important question.

"Is heaven a place we arrive at, or a place we create?"

If it is the latter, the message of Pilgrim's Progress is completely reversed. Faith is not simply about enduring. Faith is not something we endure to receive rewards in the future, but something we do now to create a “heavenly world.”

So, did Christian really make the right choice?

Was the city he left really incapable of salvation?

When he arrived in heaven, didn’t he already create hell?

I imagined this while watching Pilgrim’s Progress. What if Christian wasn’t looking for heaven, but creating it? What if he wasn’t running away, but opening a new path in the marketplace of vanities?

Faith is not a simple journey. Faith is a choice, and faith is a creation.

Heaven may not be something that is prepared somewhere, but something we create.

The Vanity Fair scene in particular left a deep impression. In this place filled with worldly pleasures and material desires, Christian and his friend Sinsil (Faithful) try to keep their faith, but Sinsil is eventually martyred. This scene delivered the message that true faith is about overcoming the temptations of the world, and sometimes great sacrifices are necessary. Here, I thought about whether I should leave, even saying goodbye to my family, or leave for the sake of my faith. What is faith? Is it simply accepting a fact as fact, or does it mean a deeper level of trust and confidence? We often use the word "believe" easily, but we have not thought deeply about what true faith is. I would like to define faith as "a conviction that follows the unseen." Whether it is faith, trust in people, or trust in oneself, I think faith always begins in uncertainty. If everything were clear, there would be no need for faith."Through the movie Pilgrim's Progress, I realized that faith is not a simple emotion, but a choice to move forward even in uncertainty. Just as Christian reached his destination despite being shaken endlessly, we also constantly face trials in life, but what's important is what we hold onto and move forward in.
