The 2004 film The Merchant of Venice is based on the play by William Shakespeare. The film is set in 16th-century Venice, and the main plot revolves around the conflict between Jewish moneylender Shylock (Al Pacino) and Christian merchant Antonio (Jeremy Irons).

Antonio learns that his friend Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) needs a large sum of money to woo his beloved Portia (Lynne Collins). However, his assets are tied up on a ship at sea, so he cannot get the money right away, so he decides to borrow the money from Shylock. Shylock remembers Antonio's history of contempt and abuse toward Jews, and offers to lend him the money, but if he fails to repay it on time, he will take a pound of Antonio's flesh. Antonio accepts this condition and borrows the money.

However, when Antonio's ship is wrecked, he cannot repay the money, and Shylock demands Antonio's flesh as per the contract in court. In court, Portia appears as a lawyer disguised as a man and argues legally against Shylock. She argues that Shylock is allowed to take the flesh, but not the blood, and leads to a legal reversal. In the end, Shylock loses, his property is confiscated, and he is forced to convert to Christianity.

Shylock's desire for revenge is understandable, but the tragedy that occurs when he insists on legal justice resonates deeply.
