The film stars American surgeon Max Lowell (Patrick Swayze). Max loses the meaning of life due to a personal tragedy, and leaves everything behind to go to India. Max accidentally arrives in a slum in Calcutta, where he meets people who do not lose hope despite the harsh environment and suffering there.

Among the residents of the slum, Hazeri (Om Puri) and his family appear as important figures. Hazeri is a person with a strong will to protect his family even in extreme poverty, and he forms a deep bond with Max. Max initially tries to distance himself as a stranger, but gradually begins to live with the slum residents and provide them with medical support. In the process, Max does not simply help others, but regains the meaning of life he had lost and heals his inner wounds.
