1820년에 침몰한 에식스호의 유일한 생존자 토머스 니커슨에게 소설가 허먼 멜빌이 찾아온다. 멜빌은 에식스호의 침몰과 포류에 대한 이야기를 말해 달라고 하지만 니커슨은 거부한다. 하지만 니커슨 아내가 형편이 어렵다며 니커슨을 설득하여 이야기를 시작한다. 실력 있는 1등 항해사인 오웬 체이스는 톰 홀랜드를 거꾸로 매달아 스파이더맨을 연상케 했으며 큰 향유고래를 잡는 등, 초반에는 순항했지만 얼마 지나지 않아 고래를 전혀 만나지 못하게 된다.

긴 항해 끝에 에식스호는 마침내 고래 떼가 가득한 멕시코 앞바다에 도착하여 포경을 시작한다. 하지만 온 몸에 흰 얼룩무늬가 있는 초거대 향유고래 한 마리가 나타난다. 도망치기 바쁜 다른 고래들과는 달리 인간을 보고도 겁 먹지 않는 이 흰고래는 오히려 에식스호에 충각 공격을 가하며 침몰시키려 든다. 결국 에식스 호는 흰고래의 공격에 부서지며 조금씩 침수된다. 설상가상으로 싣고 있던 고래 기름에 불까지 붙으면서 결국 배를 포기할 수밖에 없게 되어 작은 배 세 척으로 표류를 시작하게 된다. 포류 도중 섬을 발견해 섬에서 지낸다. 식량이 부족해 결국 체이스와 폴라드는 섬을 떠나기로 하고 부상을 입은 매튜와 섬에 남을 것을 결정한 다른 선원 둘을 남기고 떠나간다. 표류가 계속되면서 식량이 떨어지고 마침내 인육을 먹게 되는 최악의 상황에까지 이르는데 더 무서운 것은 모카딕이 아직도 이들을 추적했다는 것. 마지막 만남에서 마침내 모카딕을 죽일 수 있는 기회를 얻지만 모카딕의 눈을 본 체이스는 모카딕을 죽이지 않는다. 모카딕의 눈 위에 박힌 나무조각에 안타까움을 느낀 것. 모카딕도 그 모습을 보고 이들을 용서했는지 공격할 기회가 있었음에도 조용히 물러난다. 90여 일간의 표류 끝에 폴라드의 배는 지나던 배에 의해 구조되고 체이스의 배는 해류에 의해 육지에 도달한다.

"펜실베니아의 누군가가 땅을 팠는데 땅에서 기름이 나온다는 얘기가 있더군. 물론 헛소리겠지. 그랬다면 얼마나 좋겠나?"

나의 느낀점을 간략하게 설명하자면, 사람은 욕심이 끝도 없다고 생각한다. 고래의 기름 을 얻기 위해 많은 고래를 잔인하게 사냥하면서 기름을 꺼내 시장에 팔아 돈을 버는 것이다.

사람들은 살아가면서 욕심을 꼭 가지고 태어난다. 하지만 만약 욕심이 없다면 사는 의미가 없다고 생각한다 왜냐하면 원하는 것이 없는데 살아가는 의미가 있을까 라는 말이다. 하지만 그것이 너무 넘쳐서 문제이다. 돈을 벌어도 더 벌고싶고 더 벌기 위해 잘못된 생각을 하는 사람도 있다. 그래서 나는 이 영화를 보고 욕심은 적당히 가져야 한다는 것을 느낀 것 같다.  

The plot and feelings of the movie "Heart of the Sea" about people's greed





The novelist Herman Melville comes to Thomas Nickerson, the only survivor of the Essex, who sank in 1820. Melville asks for a story about the sinking and capture of the Essex, but Nickerson refuses. However, Nickerson's wife persuades Nickerson to start the story, saying she is in a difficult situation. Owen Chase, a talented first mate, made a cruise early on, hanging Tom Holland upside down to remind him of Spider-Man and catching a large sperm whale, but soon he won't be able to meet a whale at all.
After a long voyage, the Essex finally arrives off the coast of Mexico full of whales and begins whaling. However, a giant sperm whale with white spots appears all over its body. Unlike other whales that are busy running away, the white whale, which is not afraid to see humans, is rather trying to sink the Essex by attacking it with an angle. Eventually, the Essex is broken by a white whale attack and is gradually flooded. To make matters worse, the whale oil was on fire, and eventually, the ship was forced to give up, and the drift began with three small ships. They find an island during captivity and live on it. Due to lack of food, Chase and Pollard eventually decide to leave the island, leaving behind Matthew, who was injured, and two other sailors who decided to stay on the island. As the drift continues, food runs out and the worst situation is that they are finally eating human flesh, and what is even more frightening is that Mokadik still tracked them down. In the last encounter, you finally get a chance to kill Mokadic, but Chase, who saw Mokadic in the eye, doesn't kill Mokadic. Feeling sorry for a piece of wood stuck in Mokadic's eyes. Mokadic also quietly steps down even though he had a chance to attack them as if he had forgiven them when he saw it. After 90 days of drifting, Pollard's ship is rescued by a passing ship and Chase's ship reaches land by ocean currents.



"Someone in Pennsylvania dug the ground and there was talk of oil coming from the ground. Of course it's a load of course. How nice would that be?"




To briefly explain what I felt, I think there is no end to greed. In order to get whale oil, they make money by cruelly hunting many whales, taking out oil and selling it to the market.
People are born with greed in their lives. However, if there is no greed, I think there is no point in living because there is nothing I want. But it's a problem because it's so overflowing. Some people want to make more money even if they make more money, and some people think the wrong way to make more money. So I think I felt that greed should be moderate after watching this movie.
